Mercury is considered to be the heir apparent of the planetary cabinet.

Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo.Its exaltation sign is Virgo and it is debilitated in Pisces. Mercury’s element is earth and represents intelligence. It governs communication i.e. how you communicate to others and how they hear you. Its basis is intelligence so it commands ability to question and analyze.

Mercury is earthy & Rajsik by nature. It belongs to Vaishya caste.

Karaka Bhav – Mercury is karaka of intelligence, business, communication, speech/problems in speech, skin, central nervous system and astrology.

Exalted Mercury:

When Mercury is placed in its exalted sign (Virgo) or it is well placed in friendly planet house in the natal chart, it blesses an individual with good intellect, knowledge, presence of mind, sharp memory, command on speech and writing, philosophical bent of mind, proficiency in mathematics or accountancy.

Afflicted Mercury:

When Mercury is placed in in debilitated sign (Pisces) or placed in 6th or 8th or 12th house (unless forming vipreet rajyog) or it is aspected or conjoined by natural malefic and enemy plants, it gives native – poor memory, stammering/problems in speech, doing wrong deeds such as lying, thieving or forgery.
